6 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues – Tips from the team at your favorite Los Angeles spas

6 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues – Tips from the team at your favorite Los Angeles spas

At both of the Raven Spa’s Los Angeles locations, the New Year has gotten off to a busy start!

The last party popper is popped, champagne flutes are drained, the holidays are officially over (thank goodness, right?!). We’re all pumped up and ready to take on the New Year and a new decade ahead

Well, not so fast… everyone might not be quite so enthusiastic. Many people feel down at this time of year, despite great intentions and resolutions. Feeling dispirited and gloomy could be a case of post-holiday blues or you could be suffering from a touch of the winter blues.

Spa Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

1 – Go for a Walk

If you’re feeling down, staying active can be very helpful, and taking a walk in the middle of the day to capture as much sunlight as possible, can be invigorating and spirit lifting. Ask a friend to tag along, bonus points if she has a dog!

2 – Catch Some Rays!

Spend time outdoors in the middle of the day, especially when it’s sunny, to make the most of natural daylight. If you must stay inside, make sure to open all drapes or blinds, letting as much natural light into your living or working space as possible.

3 – Eat Healthily

Eating a healthy diet can boost your mood, so it’s a good idea to load up on fresh fruit and vegetables, or make a vegetable soup or stew to ward off those carb cravings and keep the weight off.

4 – Cozy Up

Being cold can bring on depression, so stay warm by dressing appropriately, drinking hot drinks and eating warm food. Also aim to keep your home between 64 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. And if need be, dig out that chunky knit or fleece blanket!

5 – Get Creative

It’s scientifically proven that learning something new and keeping our minds active strengthens our brains – and it’s also good at combating SAD symptoms. Having something to look forward to, like a book club, choir practice or carpentry class – can be beneficial, and so is the focus and concentration required from learning new skills.

6 – Get Sociable

Socializing is good for your mental health, so make sure you make an effort to keep in touch and engage with family and friends.
